At Sion School, learning isn’t just a process, but a value, a joy, and a shared endeavour. Every day, our pupils are encouraged to explore ideas deeply, think with originality, and nurture their natural curiosity. It is in this spirit that we are proud to offer the Lumen Scholarship, a prestigious award for exceptional pupils in Worthing and surrounding areas, seeking entry into Year 7 at Sion Senior School.
Rooted in the Latin word lūmen, meaning light, illumination and clarity, the scholarship embodies both intellectual brightness and the deeper idea of enlightenment, in the pursuit of truth, insight and understanding. This captures the very essence of what it means to be a young scholar within our community.
What the Sion Lumen Scholarship Represents
The Lumen Scholarship is designed for pupils whose learning goes beyond the expected. These are young people who delight in ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and naturally seek to understand the “why” behind the world around them.
We look for:
- Original thinkers
- Inventors
- Problem‑solvers
- Curious minds and;
- Those who enjoy stretching themselves academically and intellectually
Lumen Scholars flourish in a school culture where learning is cherished, where academic excellence is nurtured, and where curiosity is warmly encouraged. They become part of a community that values wisdom, creativity, and the confidence to explore knowledge in depth.
Sion Lumen Scholar: A Title of Distinction
To be named a Lumen Scholar is a significant title that carries gravitas, signalling strong academic potential, intellectual integrity, and a commitment to personal growth. Scholars play an active role in enhancing Sion’s culture of learning and discovery.
Working closely with our Headteacher, Lumen Scholars help to raise aspirations across the school, encouraging peers through their enthusiasm, commitment, and intrinsic motivation. Their role is both inspirational and influential, strengthening the spirit of inquiry that defines Our Lady of Sion School.
In addition to the honour of the title, the Lumen Scholarship includes a fee reduction, awarded at the discretion of the Headteacher. This reflects our commitment to ensuring that outstanding young people, who demonstrate both promise and passion, have the opportunity to shine within a community that celebrates intellectual curiosity.
The scholarship is part of Sion’s broader dedication to recognising excellence. Alongside awards such as the Ratisbonne Scholarship and the Louise Humann Scholarship, the Lumen Scholarship helps shape a dynamic, engaged and forward‑thinking student body.
