At Sion, happiness and safety aren’t just aspirations, they’re realities. From our latest PASS survey, over 90% of pupils are very happy to be at school, and an incredible 98.2% feel very safe and secure here at Sion. These figures speak volumes about our commitment to wellbeing and the nurturing environment we provide, which is stark in contrast to the broader context.
Across the country, other schools are grappling with a wellbeing crisis. The recent national Pupil Experiences in School 2024–25 report reveals a troubling reality in education today, where almost half of secondary pupils say they only “sometimes” or “never” enjoy school, and nearly a quarter feel unsafe at least some of the time. These figures should alarm every parent, educator, and policymaker.
The data reveals that 23% of students feel unsafe at school at least some of the time. Even more concerning, half of all secondary students report they “only sometimes” or “never” enjoy school. Parents often underestimate this, by a factor of three, according to the national survey.
This is a sobering reminder that a healthy school experience must go far beyond academic success. Safety, both physical and psychological, must be non-negotiable. Belonging, inclusivity, and a nurturing environment are equally vital and cannot be taken for granted.
At Sion School, these priorities are at the heart of everything we do. We believe in the potential of every child, in the importance of happiness at school, and in ensuring every child’s interests matter. These beliefs are not just words; they are reflected in our daily practice and affirmed by our Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report, which praised our approach:
“Teaching encourages pupils of all ages and abilities to grow in confidence and enjoy their learning.”
“Pastoral arrangements offer both practical and emotional support.”
“Staff develop pupils’ self-esteem and self-confidence in many ways.”
“Pupils feel confident that they are known and will be listened to.”
From our ‘Known and Nurtured’ spaces to opportunities for pupils to share their views through our What Matters platform, we ensure every child feels valued and supported. Our culture of mutual respect and care helps pupils thrive academically and emotionally.
As Deputy Headteacher, I see firsthand how inclusive, confident learners flourish, academically, socially, and emotionally. Our goal is clear: to offer a safe and nurturing atmosphere where children have the space to learn, the freedom to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow into the best version of themselves.
Our message is simple: We believe.
We believe in the happiness, safety, and wellbeing of every child.
