At Sion School, we believe education extends beyond the classroom. This term we were proud to welcome Billy and Beyond, a leading UK initiative dedicated to promoting drug safety and harm reduction among young people. Their mission is simple yet vital, to provide honest, non-judgemental guidance that helps individuals make informed choices about substances and their wellbeing.
The Billy and Beyond workshop offered our students practical advice on staying safe in real-world situations. Through interactive sessions, students learned about the risks associated with recreational drugs, how to spot danger signs, and the importance of looking out for friends. The approach was refreshingly open and realistic, acknowledging that while we cannot control every choice, we can empower young people to make safer decisions.
Headteacher Steve Jeffery shared his thoughts on why this workshop matters:
“We knew that many of our students were attending festivals, parties, and gatherings over the summer. While these experiences are part of growing up, they can also present risks. It’s essential that we raise awareness and provide non-judgemental guidance to support their choices. Our goal is not to lecture, but to equip students with knowledge that could save lives.”
This perspective reflects the ethos of Billy and Beyond which is harm reduction over fear tactics. By encouraging open conversations, the workshop helped break stigma and students were free to ask questions without judgment. Topics included understanding the effects of common substances, what to do in an emergency, and how to access trusted resources for help.
Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. Many appreciated the practical tips and the chance to discuss a subject often shrouded in misinformation. As one student put it, “It felt real. They weren’t telling us what to do, they were helping us stay safe.”
