Years 5 and 6 from Our Lady of Sion Junior School have recently completed a 5K run in aid of the mental health charity MIND.
The children were aware of the mental health impact that the pandemic has had on so many people and decided that they wanted to raise some money for this charity to help ensure that more mental health services are available for those who need them.
Taking the school’s motto, Consideration Always, to heart, the children have been training using the Couch to 5K approach and, on a very cold December day, completed their final fundraising run along Worthing seafront, accompanied by their form teachers and Teaching Assistants. The support they received from passers-by along the seafront was heart-warming and definitely cheered them on!
Tamara Pearson, Assistant Head, Head of the Junior School commented: ‘We are acutely aware of the impact lockdowns have had on mental health, fitness and wellbeing. Preparing our young Sionians for the ‘Couch to 5k’ was a positive step forward for each individual, as well as raising money and awareness of this incredible charity and the important work they do. We were overwhelmed by the personal bests reached by children and the support of the local community’.
