The Junior School pupils from Our Lady of Sion thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in UK Parliament Week 2017. This is an annual festival aimed at engaging people from across the country, exploring what Parliament means to them and empowering them to get involved.
Throughout the week, the curriculum was tailored around the theme of the UK Parliament and the children learnt about democracy and voting, Guy Fawkes and the Magna Carta. With School Council Elections, a British Icon dress-up day and a Headmaster’s PM questions assembly, the week finished off with a visit from our local MP, Sir Peter Bottomley. Sir Peter spoke to the children about his role as an MP and answered some of their questions.
Speaking about the success of the week’s event, Mrs Tamara Pearson, Senior Teacher Curriculum, said: “Following my time at The Teachers’ Institute, Parliament Education Service, in July, I am passionate about inspiring children to understand democracy and our role in it. Politics impacts every area of our lives; apathy and ignorance are not an option.”
