Sixth Form - Years 12 and 13

sion school sixth form Years 12 and 13 are for students aged 16 to 18 years, following A level courses.

The Sixth Form is an important, influential and integral part of the school community and has its own block within the school. Year 12 has its own Common Room and use the Library for private study, whilst the Year 13 students share private studies. Students value Our Lady of Sion’s Sixth Form for our excellent results, outstanding careers' service and the opportunity to be treated as an individual.

There are a number of positions of responsibility to develop leadership skills. The Heads of School (one male and one female) and House Captains organise and run Friday Assemblies for the Senior School. There is the chance to join the Editorial Team, which produces the School Magazine, Charity Prefects run numerous fundraising events and the Sixth Form Committee raises funds and organises the Leavers’ Ball. Public Relations Prefects are involved with showing prospective parents around the school.

In addition to the timetabled lessons for the chosen subjects all students will broaden their study further by taking courses in AS General Studies, Games or Community Action and Careers' Guidance.

Each term, parents will either receive either a full written report in each subject, or a grade and exam results' sheet. Parents’ Evenings are also held in October and March. Throughout the year, Year 12 students follow a structured course in Careers' Education and Guidance and they, together with their parents, are offered advice and guidance on the options available at 18. During the Autumn Term of Year 13, all students are offered individual support in the application process for a university place. This support continues after the results are published in August.

Students are not required to wear school uniform but are expected to dress appropriately as senior members of the school. They are expected to be on the school premises throughout the school day, from 8.40 am to 3.40 pm but are allowed to leave for short periods after 10.20 am and during the lunch break. All students must register with their tutor at 8.40am and 1.30 pm.

Internal students wishing to join the Sixth Form

Entry is dependent upon a good academic and behavioural track record, with positive and enthusiastic commitment and attitude. It is also expected that at least a grade C be achieved in English and Maths and at least a grade B in the subjects to be studied at A level. At present, no charge is made for Sixth Form tuition for students who have completed the first five years of the Senior School, whose fees have been paid in full and who satisfy the School’s requirements for A level study. Pro rata 6th Form fees (based on the Year 11 fee), are payable for students who join Our Lady of Sion after Year 7 and who do not gain the required number of GCSE points for a scholarship. Those 6th Form students who are not eligible for a fee charge will be subject to an administration and photocopying charge.

External candidates wishing to join the Sixth Form

External candidates must satisfy the same entry requirements as internal applicants. An offer of a place is also dependent on a confidential reference from their previous Head teacher, including recent school reports and performance at interview. Scholarships are awarded to external candidates who gain the required number of GCSE points and who fulfil the School’s criteria for entry. Those Sixth Form students who are not eligible for a fee charge will be subject to an administration and photocopying charge.

In the case of all internal and external applications, the Headmaster reserves the right to refuse any applicant.
