We believe very strongly that children at Our Lady of Sion School should learn about music and how to make music.  We focus on providing opportunities for all our students to hear a broad variety of musical styles from all over the world.  We want our students to develop performance skills so that they can develop as young musicians whilst also gaining a set of skills that will serve them in different aspect of their lives, both now and in the future.

Our students will be introduced to many compositional techniques, providing a “tool-box” of composing skills that can be utilised to create original music. Our links with professional composers and musicians provide exceptional opportunities for our students to work alongside practitioners who can advise and encourage and ultimately enable our students to compose and perform music of the highest standards.

Our very successful Music Department aims to develop aesthetic and creative ability in all pupils.  It strives to develop pupils’ understanding, knowledge, skills and enjoyment of music through involvement in performing, composing and listening.  Above all, pupils are encouraged to develop a love of music, and are encouraged to become actively involved in the musical life of the school.

Our broad extra-curricular programme offers Sion students the opportunity to make music together.  Through this programme, our students develop solo and ensemble skills and are able to enjoy the social aspect of music-making and the opportunities to perform in different venues before live audiences throughout the academic year.

We plan active and creative lessons which aim to inspire our students to engage with music as an art form and a means of expression.  A music classroom should be full of energy and sound as young people experiment individually and together to create something of which they are proud.
