Olympic Visitor to Senior School Assembly

Pupils at Our Lady of Sion School had a special visitor to their assembly on Wednesday 27th June. Gábor Balogh, modern pentathlon silver medallist at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, came to talk to the pupils and answer their questions about sport.
Gábor was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1976. He is no longer taking part in sport at Olympic level, but works as a representative for the Hungarian Government, encouraging young people in his country to take up sport. He is in England as a guest of the University of Chichester, and has been touring schools and other sports venues to talk about his sports career.
Gábor's visit was perfect timing; the 25th June was 2012 World Sport Day, which was an opportunity for schools across the UK to celebrate athletes of the world before the start of the 2012 Olympics. A short film about the pentathlon event was shown to the pupils; they were amazed to hear that pentathlon athletes have to compete in pistol shooting, fencing, a 200m swim, show jumping and a 3km cross country run.
