Senior School Sports Day 2011
The Senior School Sports Day took place on the atheltics field at Worthing Leisure Centre on Thursday 30th June. The weather was kind to us, and everyone had a wonderful time. There were some excellent results and 12 school records were broken during the course of the afternoon. At the end of the afternoon, Delta House had won the shield for the most points. The award for the girl with the highest number of points gained over the afternoon went to Faye Murton, and the boys' award was shared between Ben Roberts and Harry Forrest. Congratulations to them, and well done to all the pupils who took part. A special thanks go to Mrs Baker and all the PE staff, who worked so hard to make the day such a success.

Boys' Sport Report Summer2011
The cricket season got off to a flying start during the first week of the summer term. Three of the Sion teams were competing for league final positions.
The year 7 and 8 team, captained by Ben Roberts, played 5 games in the pool stages and won 4. The side beat Littlehampton Academy, Chatsmore, Durrington and Angmering which placed them into the semi-final against St Andrews. The number of boys competing for places in this side has raised the standard of performance and resulted in stronger fielding. The bowling from  Ben Roberts, Jack Forrest, Gabriel Martin , Finn Hudson, Clive Martin and  Louis Burch has been accurate and paced well.  The league semi-final was a challenging match against St Andrews. Sion made a slow start and were bowled out for 71 with 2 overs still remaining.  St Andrews took advantage of this target and just managed to get 1 run ahead with only 3 balls remaining.
The Year 9 cricket team had mixed fortunes these season. While playing some excellent cricket at times, they also made some mistakes which proved costly. The team batted and bowled well throughout the summer and there were notable contributions from Jack Hawkins, Ben De La Fuente, Josh Clarke and Clive Martin and Ben Roberts in the bowling. While Jack Hewett, Josh Clarke, Jack Hawkins, Christian Taylor and Oscar Gamble all scored valuable runs.  After finishing joint 2nd in the group it took a play-off between 3 teams to decide who progressed through to the semi finals. In a 7  over mini tournament all three teams ended up with one win and one defeat. That meant they needed to do a ‘bowl off’ to decide the winners. In the end it was Worthing High who triumphed and progressed to the Semis.

Year 10 Cricket Team win Southern Area League
The Year 10 Boys' Cricket Team have had a superb season this year, beating  Durrington High School in the semi-final of the Southern Area Cricket League to play Angmering School in the final on 28th June. Last year we lost to Angmering in a heavy defeat, so the boys were determined to perform well this yearl. We lost the toss were put in to bat first. The boys stayed focused throughout their innings to score an amazing total of 130 runs. Martyn Swift (27 runs)and Harry Forrest (26 runs) retired not out. Oliver Carpenter also finished the game 'not out' on 15 runs.
Angmering felt the pressure of this high score as they went in to bat. They started to swing at Sion's forceful bowling and the wickets fell fast. Toby Johnson bowled 3 overs  giving away just 7 runs for 2 wickets. Harry Forrest Bowled 4 overs giving 13 runs for 1 wicket, Sam Robinson bowled 4 overs and gave 10 runs for 1 wicket. James Burn bowled one over giving  6 runs for 1 wicket. The Captain, Martyn Swift, bowled 3 overs giving 12 runs and taking 3 wickets. In the end Sion bowled Angmering all out for 51. An outstanding victory in the Southern area final.
It has been a fantastic cricket season for all the teams and tremendous  credit must go to the boys who have represented the school and to those who competed for places in the squads.

West Sussex South District Athletics
A team form the Senior School took part in the West Sussex South District Athletics on Tuesday 18th May. Although the cold and damp weather was not ideal for athletics, the afternoon was a great success. All the schools taking part had been allocated a country, which they were asked to 'represent' to give the occasion an Olympic feel. Our school was given USA as their country.
Team USA (Sion) had some great results.
Harry Forrest in Year 10 took control of the 1500 metres from the start and romped home 70 metres clear in a time of 4. 48.
Lorna Roberts produced a great finish in the Inter Girls 800 metres to finish 2nd.
The Junior Girls relay team of Ella Forrest, Caroline Hodgson, Chloe Lelliott and Miranda Garratt were just beaten on the line and took 2nd place. Miranda also won the Discus with a personal best throw of 23.12 metres. Caroline Hodgson raced very well in the 800 metres to take 3rd place and Jessica Pyne came 2nd in the Javelin.
Year 8 students Georgie Searle and Amy Harris (running a year young) were placed 3rd and 6th respectively in the 1500 metres. Also Rebecca Farrow came 8th in the 800 metres.
Both the Inter Boys Relay team and the Inter Girls Relay team reached the final.

Junior School Girls win Sussex County Schools Tennis Championships
Two teams, a boys and a girls team, from years 4 & 5 in the Junior School took part in the Sussex County Schools Tennis Championships at Hampden Park Tennis Club on 17th May. Over 60 children were competing and the standard was very high, with several county-level players heading up their teams. The boys’ team had some very tough opponents and played well, showing great sportsmanship.

The girls team played well, and were victorious over Burgess Hill School for Girls, Moira House Girls School, Brighton College Prep School and Lancing College Prep School  to get to the finals. They played Farlington School in the final and won the match. Well done to Megan Osbourne-Shaw, Kitty Casey, Gigi Casey & Talisa-Mae Marsh, and well done to their coach, Head of Junior School PE, Mrs Elaine Philips. This is one of the best sporting results the Junior School has had in recent times, and as Mrs. Philips is retiring as Head of PE at the end of the Summer Term, after many years in this post, it will be a wonderful memory for her!
