Basketball
It has been an outstanding season for the Boys' Basketball Teams this year. The leagues and tournaments started in November and finished this week.
The year 7 team reached the final of the Southern Area tournament, having had wins against Shoreham Academy, Angmering and St Andrews. The whole team worked well together with the main scorers Seb and Louis scoring some excellent lay-ups. The final against the Angmering ‘A' Team was a competitive game right to the finish, but Sion could not cope with the height of the Angmering players. The end result was 14 -8 to Angmering. Well played to the Year 7 boys.
The year 8 team reached the semi-finals of the Southern Area Tournament with excellent results against St Andrews and Littlehampton. They came third in the District League achieving the bronze medal position. Well done to all of them.
The year 9 team dominated their tournament, beating all the teams they played to reach the final against Angmering. Players Jason and Ben were both on superb form in the final game, which resulted in a 12 -5 win to Sion. This year 9 team also reached the League final against St. Andrews. Sadly Jason was unavailable to play in the final due to illness. Despite this, the team worked extremely hard but eventually lost the match 48 -38. The team members were all awarded medals for winning the Tournament.
The Year 11 boys have also had a good run in the district basketball tournament. Following a slow start, Sion improved and needed a win in their final group match against Angmering. Ollie led by example scoring 7 points, assisted by Toby, Jack and Brendan. James B worked tirelessly up and down the court as Sion won convincingly 21 - 5, to progress to the final against St Andrews. In a very closely-fought match, both sides defended well and kept the score at 4 - 3. However, St Andrews managed to make several good baskets in the last 2 minutes and so won the final.

Netball
The Year 8 and 9 Netball Leagues started in the first week of the autumn term. The pool games have been played at Durrington High school each week. We entered two teams from Year 9 and one from Year 8.
All 3 teams completed their matches on Tuesday. The Year 9 ‘A’ team are unbeaten, the ‘B’ team just lost to Davison and the Year 8 team are also unbeaten. This means that we will have 2 teams at the finals next Tuesday, when they will face the winners and runners up of the other pool. Good luck everyone!
This is popular term for tournaments and the Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams have already been in action. At Windlesham House the Year 8 team showed how much progress they have made this year and reached the semi-final, only to lose to the hosts. The afternoon was not completely lost, as many of the team had their photo taken with Hugh Dennis (the father in ‘Outnumbered’) whose daughter was playing for Portsmouth Grammar (the eventual winners).
Last week both teams went to the Independent Schools Netball Tournament at Roedean. This was certainly a learning experience for Year 7, who battled well, but were unable to secure a win. The Year 8 team had 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 loses. These were very good results considering the strong competition.
On Wednesday the Year 8 team travelled to Westbourne House School. Although we competed well, the defences on the other teams were very solid and the team only managed one good win of 10-0 against Seaford College.
Girls' Basketball
The Under 16 Basketball league is in full swing and the Year 10 and 11 teams have won all their games. Some very strong attacking play from Chloe, Caroline (both year 10) and Amelia (year 11) has resulted in good scoring opportunities. Well done!
Charlton Chase Night Hike Competition 4th February
Unfortunately, due to the snow, this event was called off at midnight, as it was deemed too unsafe for the safety vehicles to allow the hike to continue. Our students were the last team to set off and had reached the first checkpoint of four. The calling off was very disappointing, but safety has to come first.
Four members of the sixth form took part in this popular night hike competition; this year they competed in the Standard competition after finishing 3rd in the Novice competition last year. Tino, Andrew, Ellie and Helen were competing against 85 teams, 57 of them in the standard event.
There are three levels of competition; Novice, Standard and Premier. Each team is required to navigate from checkpoint to check point, gaining points for successfully doing so, as well as achieving additional points by undertaking tasks at nodals. The competition is expected to last 8 hours for each team, finishing at around 8:30am on Sunday morning.

Planning the Route Starting out!
Lido Junior 1 mile race along Worthing Seafront
On Sunday the 29th Georgie and Amy, plus Year 7 pupils Ellie and Millie and sisters Imogen and Saskia all competed in the Lido Junior 1 mile race along Worthing Seafront. Despite suffering tiredness from her race of the day before, Georgie finished a very good 3rd place and Amy finished 6th. The Year 7 girls also ran extremely well, competing against athletes a number of years older than themselves, with Imogen finishing 29th, Ellie 33rd, Millie 35th and Saskia 46th. A great result - well done!
Southern Cross Country Championships
Georgina and Amy, both from year 9, took part in the Southern Cross Country Championships, held on 28th January, in Stanmer Park, Brighton, which last hosted the event in 1986. This year, in the Under-15 girls' event, many of the top athletes in the country competed for the title of Southern Champion. Athletes came from as far away as Norfolk and Cornwall in order to compete. In a race with over 250 starters, Georgina battled her way to 86th, while Amy improved from last years position of 156th to finish in 109th place. Congratulations to both of them.
Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships
On Saturday 21st January, Georgie, Amy and Rebecca, all in year 9, competed at the Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships held at Lancing Manor. In a highly competitive age group which included some of the county’s top athletes, Georgie finished 13th and a storming second lap from Amy brought her from outside the top 20 to 16th place. As a result both girls qualified to compete for Sussex at the Inter Counties match on Saturday in Basildon, Essex. Rebecca finished a very respectable 34th. Only 66 runners finished the race. Well done to all of them, and good luck to Georgie & Amy at Basildon.
