Boys Sports Report 5th March 2010
With many of the Rugby and football pitches still unplayable due to the weather, we were pleased to get our Under 14 Rugby match played against Durrington in the Southern  League.  The team, consisting of year 8 and 9 boys, were fully focused after having a poor start in their previous match. The team took control from the start with excellent running rugby: the forwards were excellent, beating the Durrington pack and providing lots of opportunities for the backs. Well done to Ollie Carpenter who took 4 scrums against the head! The Sion team were the clear winners, which puts us to the top of the league.

Next week, the year 7 indoor athletics team compete in the Shield finals, the Year 8 rugby team  play two matches against Littlehampton and St Andrews and the Year 9’s take on Shoreham Academy and Shoreham College.

Sports Report Spring Half-term 2010
There have been some great individual and team results since the beginning of term.

Indoor Athletics
The annual Worthing Area Indoor Athletics meeting was held on 11th February. The athletes have to take part in running, throwing and jumping events to earn points for their school.  There were some outstanding performances from all the Sion students. After a superb effort from  the year 5 , 6 and 7 students, Sion were finally placed 4th, which qualifies them for the Shield competition held in March.

Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships
Seven pupils from Our Lady of Sion school qualified to run in the finals of the Sussex Schools' Cross Country Championship, which took place at Lancing Manor Sports Ground on Saturday 23rd January.
Harry Forrest, Jeremy Parker and James Burn all qualified for the boys U-13 race, and all ran a good race. Harry was placed 23rd, in a strong field, and the other two acquitted themselves well.
Ella Forrest, Chloe Lelliott, and Caroline Hodgson all qualified for the girls U-13 race. Caroline was unable to take part, due to a Brighton Youth Team Football commitment, but the other two ran well; Ella was placed 34th.
The star of the day was Brittany Saville, who was running in the Senior Girls’ Race (U-18). Brittany has been competing in this event for the last six years. She finished this year's race more than a minute in front of her nearest rival, to win the title for the fifth successive year.

Sion's other top Senior Cross Country runner, Abi Fowler, did not take part in the Sussex Schools Cross Country, although she had qualified to do so. She was in training for the Worthing Harriers Lido 4 mile Run, which took place on the 8th Feb 2010. There were 400 entrants, and Abi came first in the women's race with a time of 24 minutes 30 seconds, beating the second place runner by a full 15 seconds. She has now qualified to compete for Sussex in the UK Inter-County Championships to be held in Birmingham in March.

Brittany Saville competes in the English National Cross Country Championship
Last weekend (27th February) Brittany ran in the English Cross-country championships at Roundhay Park Leeds. There were 249 athletes entered into the event, which is the National Cross Country Championship. Brittany had a sparkling run to finish 19th in the U20 women’s race; her performance is fantastic considering she is running against girls who are up to two years older than her. She was just 30 seconds behind an GB international who finished 12th......that’s around 150metres in a cross country!
Brittany and Abi Fowlie are competing for Sussex on 13th March at Birmingham in the Inter Counties and World Cross Country Trials. The event is being televised by Sky Sports.
The following week they are hopefully both at Manchester for the English Schools National Championships (we are still waiting to get confirmation that Abi has been selected).

Basketball
Four teams travelled to Birmingham for the National 3 on 3 Basketball Finals. The Year 8 boys reached the semi finals and the Year 8 girls, Year 7 boys and girls just missed out on goal difference. It was a really good day. The teams would like to thank Mr Arnold and their parents for getting them there and back.

The Year 9 Basketball League is also taking place this term and the team have won all their games convincingly. Yesterday they beat Shoreham Academy 24-8 and Littlehampton Academy 26-4. They lead the table.

The year 7 mixed basketball team played in the Worthing Area District Tournament on Wednesday 10th February. The team had to play  6 matches during the afternoon and they showed outstanding skill in all of them; they beat Shoreham Academy 6 -4, Angmering B team 4-0 and Thomas a'Beckett 'A' team 4-2 . The winner of the competition was decided on the last match against Angmering 'A' team. The game was close throughout but three excellent baskets from Gaby D’ademo, Chloe Osborne-shaw and Jason Perysinakis completed an excellent performance and a well deserved Victory for the Sion Team. Ben Roberts had a very good tournament scoring 18 points and helping Sion to win the event.

On Wednesday the Year 8 team went to Westbourne House for a tournament, and were placed 6th out of 11 teams.
