PSCHE & Citizenship
PSCHE
The letters PSCHE stand for Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education.
Our Lady of Sion School follows the National Curriculum secondary guidelines for PSCHE, introduced in September 2008. PSCHE aims to help pupils develop self-awareness and responsibility towards others and to give pupils the skills to make informed life-style choices. It promotes their wellbeing and enables them to develop their potential as healthy, enterprising and responsible citizens in our society.
PSCHE covers topics such as:
- Citizenship;
- Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking awareness;
- Emotional Health and Wellbeing;
- Nutrition and Physical Activity;
- Personal Finance;
- Safety;
- Sex and Relationship Education.
All pupils in Years 7 - 10 follow the school's PSCHE programme. Years 7 & 9 are timetabled for one lesson per week; from September 2009, Year 9 will be following a new course, majoring on Citizenship. Pupils in Years 8 & 10 have special off time-table sessions four times a year, following a rolling programme. Some of these sessions are taught in-house, and on other occasions specially trained guest speakers visit the school to address the pupils on selected PSCHE topics.

PSCHE AT OUR LADY OF SION SCHOOL
The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils at Our Lady of Sion School is viewed as extremely important and is fundamentally linked to the school’s ethos and Mission Statement. It is designed to promote principles which:
a) Enable pupils to develop self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
b) Enable pupils to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the law
c) Encourage pupils to take responsibility, to show initiative and to learn to contribute to the wider community and society in general
d) Give general information about public institutions and services primarily in the United Kingdom but also in Europe
e) Assist pupils to appreciate and respect their own and other cultures, promoting tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions
In addition to the work referred to in the Scheme, all students receive regular PSCHE input through whole school and form assemblies, form periods, and contact with teachers – both pastoral and non-pastoral.
The School motto; “Consideration Always”
permeates all that we do in the daily life of the school, leading to expectations of respect and tolerance, elimination of bullying and allowing every child to develop self-esteem and confidence.
