PE and Sport
SPORT (PE)
A broad and balanced programme of PE is taught throughout the school by specialist and non-specialist staff enabling every child to find something they enjoy and through which they can gain a sense of achievement.
Co-operation and a competitive spirit are developed through inter-house sporting activities and regular fixtures against other local schools. Our specialist Games teachers ensure that sport plays an important part in the life of the school.
There are Annual House competitions in most of the sports mainly for Years 5 and 6 as well as House Mini Swimming Galas for all classes from Year 2 to Year 6.
We offer Key Stage 2 pupils, extra- curricular team practices for football, netball and summer games which take place each term either at the Junior School, Senior School or Off-site.
Tennis coaching is offered to Years 2 – Year 4 at the Junior School.
Starting in the Foundation Stage with basic skills, the curriculum steadily builds to cover a range of activities including dance, gymnastics and ball skills.
The large, well equipped Senior School is also used by Years 3 to 6 for some lessons each week. Years 2 – 6 are able to enjoy a structured and progressive swimming programme at the nearby 33m Aquarena Pool. To see details of the Water Skills Swimming Awards - Click Here
The school was recently awarded a Sport England Activemark, reflecting the breadth and quality of the PE curriculum.
The Year 6 Netball team also won the Summer Netball League.
Key Stage 2
The Physical Education programme is designed to provide a wide range of educational experiences. Individual skills are taught and used to develop co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina. Teamwork and tactics are also developed, encouraging responsibility and co-operation.
The activities used to meet these ends range from tag rugby, soccer, basketball, cricket, athletics, tennis and swimming for the boys and netball, tag rugby, basketball, rounders, athletics, tennis and swimming for the girls.
Years 3 – 6 use the Senior School astro-turf and newly laid netball courts for dedicated games lessons and the Senior School gym for gymnastics and fitness lessons.
Pupils are encouraged to participate in team practice sessions for netball and soccer on a weekly basis.
In Years 5 and 6 there is an emphasis on team games with all girls and boys having the opportunity to represent the school in a team during their final two years. Regular matches and competitions against other schools build on both School spirit and confidence.
All Key Stage 2 pupils have a termly swimming session at the Aquarena with Year 3 having two consecutive terms.
Years 5 and 6 take part in an annual local Indoor Athletics competition and training for this takes place in the Spring Term.
The sporting year culminates in the Annual House Sports Day which takes the form of Potted Sports encompassing all skills that the pupils have experienced throughout the year.
Outdoor and adventurous education
Pupils in Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in a non-residential Outdoor Pursuits ‘2 day experience’ at a local Activity Centre. The pupils open canoe on the River Adur, indoor climb, problem solve, orienteer, raft build and Mountain Biking, all taught by professionals at the activity centre.
Pupils in Year 6 compliment this experience with a 4 day residential stay at Bowles Activity Centre near Tunbridge Wells, where they can rock climb, abseil, kayak on the River Medway, orienteer, raft build, dry ski and other exciting and character- building experiences.
