AS/A2 Level in Physical Education
AS OCR H154 A2OCR H554

Physical Education and its potential

  • Today there are many careers in Physical Education, Leisure and Recreation. Completing the AS Physical Education course will enable students to enter this market or, alternatively, to go onto Further Education Colleges and Universities to study for HND's or Degrees.
  • AS Physical Education embodies the students not only with extensive subject knowledge, but also other Key Skills essential for the world of work. For example, students will develop social and interactive skills, learning to work effectively as a member of a team, attaining targets and ultimately being successful.

Aims of the course
The main purpose of the course is to develop the students' theoretical knowledge and their ability to put the theory into practice.

Entry requirements

  • The qualification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed at GCSE.
  • It is expected that students will have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE and have a particular strength in the theoretical content at GCSE level.
  • Students following this course are expected to participate at club level in at least one activity and show an interest in another.

Who is this suitable for?
Students who wish to undertake further studies in Physical Education in order to work in the Leisure, Recreation and Education industries. This may, however, mean gaining additional qualifications from Colleges and Universities. The course is also well suited to students considering the armed forces or public services as a career.

Course structure
The AS level course will involve:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Skill acquisition
  • Social studies in sport and physical education.

Assessment will be a written exam contributing towards 60% of the course. The remaining 40% is an assessment of two practical activities and an evaluation of a live performance showing a detailed understanding of the activity.

The second year of the course enables students to develop a detailed understanding of the sporting world. The content includes:

  • Sport Psychology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Comparative studies.

Students will also be expected to specialise in their practical activity and will therefore only be assessed in one sport. It is therefore important that all candidates participate in a sport at Club Level or higher.
