Key Stage 2 Curriculum
We offer your child an exceptionally broad and balanced curriculum in these years. The Curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Art/DT, French, Geography, History, Music, PSCHE, PE and RS. Our independence enables us to fully use our professional expertise, providing greater flexibility in our teaching.
Pupils are encouraged to use their initiative and reasoning ability and to develop a self-disciplined approach to their studies. Comprehensive library and computer facilities enable them to pursue special interests, research for class projects and acquire a wide general knowledge.
We aim to ensure that each child:
• develops to his or her full potential
• becomes fluent in writing and reading English
• is confident at reasoning through and solving mathematical problems
• is able to follow through scientific reasoning and to create and write up simple experiments.
Written reports are sent to parents at the end of the Autumn and Summer terms and individual Consultation Evenings are held in the Spring Term.
Homework is essential as it ensures that pupils have sufficient practice in the mechanics of the subjects concerned, so that class time can be devoted to the teaching of new skills. Written homework is not set in Early Years, but the children take home reading or library books daily.
Written homework is set on a daily basis Monday to Thursday as follows:-
Year 1 Reading: 15 minutes
Year 2 Maths or English: 10 minutes
Year 3 Maths or English: 20 minutes
Year 4 Maths or English: 30 minutes
Year 5 Maths or English: 35 minutes
Year 6 Maths or English: 40 minutes
Science homework is set weekly in Years 5 and 6.
There is close liaison between Junior and Senior Schools. This helps pupils to settle into the Senior School and ensures progression in the curriculum. Most pupils transfer to the Senior School at the end of Year 6.
