KS2 Science
Our Science curriculum aims to encourage and extend a child's natural curiosity, to develop an enthusiasm for the subject which will last, and a solid knowledge basis on which to build as their education progresses.
At Key Stage 2 Science is taught as a separate subject. The topics encompass aspects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and are broadly linked to the Q.C.A. documentation.
Lessons may involve investigation, observation and research, using a range of media, including information technology. Practical activities form a key part of Science lessons and involve the children in a wide range of activities.
Our lessons are not limited to the classroom; throwing parachutes down stairwells and hunting for signs of life in our dead wood habitat are all part of the Science curriculum.
Off-site activities enhance learning and provide opportunities that might not otherwise be possible. For example, Year 3 and 4 visit Woodsmill in the Summer term to study a wider range of habitats.
In year 5 there is a particular emphasis on investigation and practical Science, with the children undertaking an investigation each week. This prepares them well for the change of venue at year 6, when the children have their lessons in the Senior School Science laboratories.
At Our Lady of Sion we aim to provide a stimulating and challenging curriculum, to produce learners with a real understanding of the subject, and a desire to continue to develop their Science education as they move through the school and beyond.
RSPB Annual British Bird Survey
In the spring term 2011, Year 5 participated in the RSPB’s annual survey of British birds. They recorded their results in various graphs and charts. The information was collated and sent to the RSPB as part of their annual, nationwide survey. This survey is carried out to record the variety of birds found in the United Kingdom and the increase and decline in numbers of native species.
Year Five have also made drawings of the different birds they observed over the period of time they recorded their results.

Professor Swititov's Energy Workshop
Junior School pupils in KS1 & 2 learned about how energy is made, and how they can play their part in conserving and saving energy in their homes. KS2 pupils (years 3 & 4) took part in Professor Swititov's Examination of Energy Excellence, during which they looked at different ways of generating and saving energy. The activities they took part in ranged from home energy efficiency to recycling and food miles.
The sessions were presented by David Rees, and his assistant, from The Environment Centre, which is a charitable organisation, which aims to support and promote environmental best practice. They run a programme of workshops, which deliver the message about looking after the environment in a fun and inspirational way.

Looking at changing liquids into solids
Year 5 pupils are experimenting with an egg and flour mixture to see what happens when we use heat to change a liquid to a solid. Fortunately, they were able to taste the results of their experiment, to see if it really was a solid!
