Debating Society
Capital Punishment was the topic of the first debate held this year. The motion was that “This House believes that the death penalty should be brought back into practice.” There was a relatively large turn out of spectators, with twenty five people, including students, sixth formers and a few teachers coming along ready to debate their views. A vote was taken at the beginning of the debate to calculate the numbers for each side, and then again at the end, to finalise the debate. Many students, including some year seven pupils had some brilliant and thought-provoking points to make about this subject. Finally the motion was carried; fourteen people’s minds were changed by the persuasive and convincing arguments of the pro capital punishment side!

DNA Debate Summary
The second debate of the year was on Tuesday 15th December and was also a great success. The motion of this debate was “This House believes that DNA should be kept on a Database from birth”. Unfortunately, not as many turned up as last time, but approximately fifteen people did turn up to argue their views. More than ¾ of the room were in agreement with the motion before the debate, so Sam and Rosanna, debating that DNA should not be kept on the database had a difficult job on their hands. They managed to alter some people’s minds, but it wasn’t enough to win and the motion was carried. Everyone who turned up, gave intelligent views and a great input.
The Debating team look forward to the next debate, which will be held some time in the new year.
