Awards Ceremony November 2010
Awards Ceremony
On 22nd November 2010, 78 young people from Adur and Worthing were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, at a ceremony held at Our Lady of Sion School. The participants received certificates for completion of their bronze and silver awards and one student, Mark Austin from Worthing College, received the most prestigious Gold Award. Lilian Holdsworth (MBE), the Chairman of the County Committee, presented the awards and said afterwards it was the most upbeat evening, with excellent presentations which clearly reflected the cohesive group of unit leaders and volunteers in the area. Some of the young people gave presentations on the evening which demonstrated some of the great experiences they had had whilst on expeditions. Two participants Tino Chikita, and Eve Daniels sang beautifully on the evening, demonstrating some of the exceptional skills and talent all these young people have. In order to complete their awards, the participants have to complete 4 sections at bronze and silver; volunteering, physical , skill and expedition. An additional residential section is added at gold. The award is progressive in its commitment and timescale; from bronze up to gold. Jo Ireland the area co-ordinator stressed the importance to the young people of completing this programme which is the world’s leading achievement programme for young people and is looked upon as the next most important achievement after formal qualifications by employees and universities. There are currently 13 units running this award in Adur and Worthing. The young people at the awards ceremony undertook their Duke of Edinburgh awards at Our Lady of Sion School, St. Andrews High School, The Rosie Youth Wing, Boundstone Youth Wing, 2nd Durrington Blake Explorers, 8th Worthing Sea Scouts, 2nd Worthing Girls Brigade and Worthing College.
